TMJ Treatments

“The jaw joint called the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) has a disk, ligaments and multiple muscles that work in unison allowing the jaw to function properly. Sometimes the TMJ can cause pain called TMD. The pain can be chronic or spontaneous.”


Symptoms of TMD:

  • Headaches
  • Clicking or popping of the joint
  • Difficulty opening and closing the jaw
  • Sore jaw muscles
  • Earaches

Causes of TMD:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Joint Imbalance from improper alignment of teeth or missing teeth
  • Disc Injury
  • Overuse (grinding/clenching)
  • Arthritis
  • Trauma

Treatment of TMD:

  • Moist Heat
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs and/or muscle relaxants
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Night Guard
  • Soft Diet
  • Restore joint balance with crowns, adjust your bite, or move teeth
  • Acupuncture
  • Surgery (in rare cases)
  • Botox

If you experience TMD it is important to get an evaluation. Proper treatment of TMD can prevent further damage to the joint and teeth.
